Pantheon (Basilica Sancta Maria ad Martyres) Guided Tour

Learn about the Pantheon in the magnificent local context of a Roman afternoon. The itinerary, lasting about one hour, narrates the history but above all the curiosities and lesser-known facts of the Basilica of Saint Mary and the Martyrs, the Pantheon.

For over 2000 years, the Pantheon has represented the maximum expression of the glory of Rome, and its story is intimately tied to the Eternal City. It is the only Roman building that has remained practically intact through the centuries. Started by Marcus Agrippa between 25 and 27 BC as a temple dedicated to the twelve gods and to the living sovereign, the Pantheon was later completely destroyed by a fire. It was rebuilt under the reign of Emperor Hadrian in the year 125. The Byzantine Emperor Phocas gave the Pantheon to Pope Boniface IV in 608 AD. Boniface ordered the remains of many martyrs removed from the Christian catacombs and placed in the Pantheon, converting it into a Christian church. The temple was officially consecrated on May 13, 609 under the name of Sancta Maria ad Martyres, Saint Mary and Martyrs.

The Pantheon has been an inspiration for many of the greatest architects, such as Filippo Brunelleschi. Among the illustrious people buried here are the painters Raphael (who requested it to become his place of eternal rest) and Annibale Carracci, the composer Arcangelo Corelli, and two kings of Italy - Vittorio Emanuele II and Umberto I with his wife Margherita.
